TEEN ENTREPRENEUR PROGRAMME EXPANDS TO INCLUDE START-UP WEEKENDS

The SA Teen Entrepreneur Foundation is expanding its range of projects to include a programme called Teen Start-up Weekends. The project will do exactly what the name infers – to offer a weekend entrepreneurship and innovation course aimed primarily at learners who do not belong to Entrepreneur Societies at school level. The module will also extend to other youth groups who wish gain the requisite knowledge and skills to start their own businesses. Teen Start-up Weekends will commence from June 2016, and will cost R1450 per person to attend this life-changing course. This project is a collaboration between Entrepreneur & Management Solutions, Over the Rainbow, and the SA Teen Entrepreneur Foundation. WE'RE LOOKING FOR BRAND AMBASSADORS; DO YOU QUALIFY? We're looking for young ladies and gentlemen who will increase our brand value by representing the SA Teen Entrepreneur Programme to our primary target audience, that being, high school principals, teachers, and learners. We simply need you to represent- and talk about the programme in a positive way. We think that brand ambassadors would be great for the programme because:

It is true that word-of-mouth is an effective means of selling a programme, idea, or concept. When people hear positive feedback about the programme, they will be inclined to believe and support it.
The youth's level of 'connectedness' is very powerful. By empowering young people who are passionate about the SA Teen Entrepreneur Programme to refer fellow learners is not just a 'nice' marketing tool, it is absolutely essential for the programme's success.

OUR TEACHER CHAMPIONS GIVE THEIR PERSPECTIVES ON THE PROGRAMME

We caught up with Mr Azeem Firfirey, Teacher Champion at the Gardens Commercial High School, on what the SA Teen Entrepreneur Programme means to him and his learners. "As the champion at GCHS, I wish to thank all involved with the Teen Entrepreneurship project for including us in the programme. Together with my group of young entrepreneurs, I find the project extremely exciting and stimulating. The group is being challenged to stretch their thinking to come up with new innovative and exciting products. I believe that as we continue through the various modules, we will constantly be improving on our original ideas."

Being an entrepreneur presents an amazing opportunity to test your innovative business ideas and see if they will work. It provides a way of bringing your passion to life as you play your part in making people's lives better. Embarking on this entrepreneurial adventure can be the most exhilarating, happy, frustrating – and profitable – journey of your life. Below are a few myths about who entrepreneurs are and how they function: Myth: Entrepreneurs are born and not made Reality: While entrepreneurs are born with a certain natural intelligence, a flair for creativity, and energy, these qualities can be described as unmoulded clay. The making of an entrepreneur comes about by accumulating the relevant skills, knowledge, experience, and contacts over a period of time. It includes large doses of self-development; the creative capacity to pursue an opportunity is a consequence of a number of years of experience. Myth: Anyone can start a business Reality: Entrepreneurs who recognise the difference between an idea and an opportunity, and who can visualise potential, start businesses that have a better chance of succeeding. Starting the business is often the easiest part. Surviving, sustaining, and building an organisation so its founders can see the reward is often the hardest part. Only a small percentage of businesses that survive five or more years eventually produce a profit for its owners. Myth: Starting a business is risky and often ends in failure Reality: Talented and experienced entrepreneurs pursue attractive opportunities and attract the right people and the necessary financial and other resources to ensure that their businesses are successful. Businesses might fail, but true entrepreneurs do not. Failure is very often the one thing that sharpens an entrepreneur's experience and street savvy.

MEDIA PARTNERSHIP WITH CAPE TALK RADIO AND LEADSA GIVES FAR-REACHING EXPOSURE TO OUR PROGRAMME

We have managed to land quite a critical and crucial partnership with LeadSA and Cape Talk Radio. Cape Talk's breakfast show presenter, Kieno Kammies, who is passionate about the youth and youth development, and has committed to supporting SA Teen Entrepreneurs' activities and programs for this year.

He was recently the guest speaker at our first in a series of 6 'Awaken the Giant in You' breakfast talk for 2016s, and covered many topical issues facing our young people today, these being – staying motivated and committed to achieving your goals and aspirations, believing in yourself, never giving up, and always striving to be the best that you can be! Words to live by!! With the help of the team at Cape Talk, we have managed to produce a video to capture the activities of the morning; see below link…

Entrepreneur Societies from Ikamvalethu, Langa, Isilimela, and Spes Bona high schools were present at the breakfast. To summarise the morning… energetic, insightful, interactive…definitely cannot wait for the next one…!

If we can instil a culture of entrepreneurship amongst our youth, we will go a long way to creating a better outlook for our economy and our country.

ENTREPRENEUR SOCIETIES AND IDEA CAFÉS ARE ROLLING OUT RAPIDLY

Interest in our programme is growing daily, and we now have a total of 10 schools who have established Entrepreneur Societies in the Western Cape. The programme is already active in these schools, we have done the kickstart Idea Café, and learners are hard at work with conceptualising their entrepreneurial ideas. We are encouraged by the enthusiasm from principals, teachers, and learners, and we are tending to requests to come onto the programme from areas such as Atlantis, and as far afield as Gauteng, KZN, and the Eastern Cape. It is our intention to grow participation to 100 schools in the Western Cape before the end of 2016, with rollout to other provinces having progressed significantly by early 2017. Participating schools include Gardens Commercial High School, Herzlia Middle School, Ikamvalethu High School, Isilimela High School, Langa High School, Oude Molen High School, Spes Bona High School.

PLEASE SHARE THIS link and ENCOURAGE YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY TO DONATE TO THE PROGRAMME, THEREBY SUPPORTING THIS EXCITING INITIATIVE! The Foundation was selected by the Rotary Club of Cape Town – Noon Gun, and the fundraising drive is centred on their participation in the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon on Saturday, March 26.

WE CELEBRATE OUR YOUTH ENTREPRENEUR AMBASSADORS

We are most fortunate to be supported by a team of Youth Entrepreneur Ambassadors. They work tirelessly to promote the SA Teen Entrepreneur Programme amongst the youth and encourage participation. We caught up with Jamie Thurston and asked him why he is so passionate about the programme: Q: Why do you support the SA Teen Entrepreneur Programme? A: I would love to have known what I know now when I was younger to be able to embark on my entrepreneurial journey much sooner. I fully support SA Teen Entrepreneur because they give this opportunity of a head start to youngsters. Their program is informative and fun, unlike most youth focused programs. I support the programme because they have been a huge influence on my life, and I have them to thank for further opening my mind to entrepreneurship opportunities. Q: What is the extent of your involvement? A: I've been privileged enough to be one of the first graduates in their programme and have since been supporting them wherever I can. As an ambassador I have been representing the SA Teen Entrepreneur Programme on various platforms and at events and interviews. I believe I am a testimony of the good work done on the programme. Q: What are your interests outside of promoting the programme? A: I have a huge interest in biotechnology and using science to better the quality of life for humans and animals, as well as to develop innovative ways to creating a safer, cleaner planet with my focus in industrial and environmental biotechnology. I'm also big on business development and this is where SA Teen Entrepreneur has made a bigger impact on my life. Graphic design, brand development, and social media optimization keeps me extremely busy! Q: Where are you currently employed? A: Where employment is concerned I have been working for The Agency SA (like the page facebook.com/theagencysa) a company I started in 2011. I do concept development where we work on developing ideas/project management/ running campaigns for various clients. Currently we are involved in a big project at UWC, running the #iamUWC social media campaign and assisting in the Ikamva Lethu fund that financially assist students with university fees, accommodation and food. We need to raise R15 million by August so if you are keen to help in creating a brighter future for someone, please do get in touch with me. Besides these I am actively involved in various other projects. I do media and have been a radio presenter, I work in the entertainment industry and work with musicians. I'm also very involved with fashion and design and recently started making hand crafted one-of-a-kind bow ties. Check out fb.com/alwaysbowtime. Q: Why or how has this job impacted your view of life? A: The nature of my work gives me the privilege to work with different people from different backgrounds and this opens my mind to new things and new ways of thinking. I'm always keen to learn and through networking in various industries, I'm able to further develop my intellectual capability. I love my job and what I do, the thing I've learnt the most is how to work with people and how to turn passion into an income.
